Water! Water! Water!

Today I write about something we all need everyday, but feel the need of, more than ever right now. It isn’t beer, it isn’t wine, it isn't coffee. It is something better: it is called water. I would say that it feels like a craving from the minute I wake up til the minute I go to bed, and I can also wake up in the middle of the night and feel that craving.

The element of water is related to intuition and sensitiveness, and people who are “water-people” feel more intensely than the rest. They are emotional and nurturing, and like a river, they run deep.

In the Bible, the very first words say that the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Which means I guess that the water was there even before everything else.

Water, vatten, l’eau, l’aqua, voda, vann...

Water in hinduism has a special place because it is believed to have spiritually cleansing powers. To Hindus all water is sacred, especially rivers. I really like the thought of water as something sacred. It is such a beautiful thought. In all religions, we practice baptizing ceremonies, in water. To me, an evening swim in a fresh, cool still lake in Sweden is like a baptize ceremony. It is the absolute most lovely experience I can ever think of and I feel very greatful to have it close and totally for free in my life.

Water, ice and cucumber, which is 96 percent of water...

Many things are often taken for granted, but this, our fresh water, must be the main one, at least for us here in Scandinavia, Europe, and some other countries. We don’t appreciate it enough. Today when warnings are out, and people are given advice to keep water stored in the fridge to keep it cold, instead of wasting it, I saw a man watering his lawn from a water spreader. He just let it be there, on full speed. Did not care to give respect to the fact that we should take notice and cherish the abundance of water that we are so blessed with here. And what about forest fires? We may need to save some water for an emergency situation. But he probably just didn’t think of it. He had just moved into a little house with a garden maybe for the first time in his life. Problem is, that we think of water as something we have for free. But this summer, in this weather, this dry and hot period that surprises us all, we have to realize what a priviligue it is to easily have plenty of fresh water everywhere.

Water is essential to all humans beings, all animals and nature. We just can’t live without it. You can survive without food, but not without water.

It is not only about drinking water. What if I couldn’t wash my hands or take a shower? What if I couldn’t make coffee in the morning? How about that? What if I couldn’t boil my vegetables? What if I couldn’t dish or clean? What if I had to go to a hospital that didn’t have any water? What if I couldnẗ clean my clothes or sheets that I sleep in? It is quite hard to imagine what it would be like. What if I had to walk a long way to find it, and had to carry it all the way back home?

Did you know that

- 844 million people don’t have clean water close to home.

- 2.3 billion people don't have a decent toilet of their own.

- 31% of schools don’t have clean water.

- Every minute a newborn dies from infection caused by lack of safe water and an unclean environment

- Diarrhoea caused by dirty water and poor toilets kills a child under 5 every 2 minutes.

- Around the world up to 443 million school days are lost every year because of water-related illnesses.

- The main reason to lack of water is war.

We all need water, first to survive, then to enjoy, to be cooled in the heat and to feel good. Whoever we are and wherever we live. So take care. Make a decision. Be thankful for every drip of water today.
